Important News Update 9/30/2005

RED CROSS REGISTRATION ON LINE:

Katrina evacuees can now register for Red Cross benefits ON LINE. Rita evacuees still may not do so, but that should change shortly and the procedure for doing so will be published on this page.

To register, Katrina evacuees should use the following procedure:

1. Go to the following web page: Katrina Evacuees Register Here

2. Complete the form carefully, using the actual mailing address of the shelter or home where you are currently living. State Park residents should include the site or cabin number. DO NOT use a PO box number as the Red Cross will NOT mail to a post office box address. When you have completed the form, click on "save entry" and the information will be submitted to the Red Cross. Your "PIN" number will then be mailed directly to you at the shelter address. Once you receive your "PIN" you may go to any Western Union office to collect your benefits. You may receive a check in the mail instead of a PIN, but either way, it should work.

WHO SHOULD REGISTER?:
a. Head of household (father or mother if married, but not the children)
b. Unmarried persons living in the same household (both should register)
c. Married parents or in-laws living in the household (one registration per couple)
d. Other relatives living in the household (each or each married couple should register)

3. Those people who resided in the following ZIP codes have been approved for benefits: NOTICE

Special Notice:
(Expires 15 October 2005)

Rita victims can register with FEMA on line (www.fema.gov), but the FEMA representative in Minden is only servicing Katrina people for now.

Those Katrina victims who received “disaster cards” at the Food Stamp office can expect new benefits after 8 October. Those victims who were already on food stamps can expect these benefits to become effective after 15 October. Rita evacuees will not be able to apply for food stamps until later this week, probably Thursday afternoon or Friday, however the food stamp office is scheduled to be open all weekend (Saturday and Sunday) to assist you.

Those evacuees looking for employment in this area should call the Community Development Council (CDC) at 927-6333.
